Purpose:
Those seeking certification will learn critical
skills and knowledge for effective administrative
performance within the juvenile justice system.
Emphasis is placed on the development of management
and leadership competencies regardless of one’s area
of specialization within the system. Students will
be able to define and measure Key Performance
Indicators (KPIs), as well as be able to identify
personal strengths and areas of opportunity in terms
of the Juvenile Justice Management Competency Model.
As a credentialing process by NJCSA,
certification focuses specifically on top-level
juvenile justice personnel and serves as an
indication of competency in the field of juvenile
justice management. Professional Juvenile Justice
Administrator (PJJA) will distinguish these
administrators as persons who have reached the
highest levels of achievement in terms of knowledge
and skills related to core competencies.
Administration:
The PJJA program will be
administered by the National Juvenile Court Services
Association and will be managed by a Certification
Committee.
Eligibility:

NJCSA Membership
- 3 Years Experience and current employment as an
administrator/manager (Defined as a top official who supervises staff)
- 3
Letters of Reference (attesting to professional
competence)

Certification Process:
Juvenile Justice Administrators not only will be able to obtain certification, but
by taking courses they will also be able to receive
academic credit toward a Master of Justice
Management degree program offered by the University
of Nevada, Reno, and endorsed by NJCSA and the
National Council, of Juvenile and Family Court
Judges. In addition, we are in process of registering our courses for state
in-service training credit and CEUs (updates to be posted as individual state agreements developed - second half of 2007).

- Information Technology
- History of Juvenile Justice
- Policy and Procedure Development

- Wraparound Strategies
- Budget/Financial Planning
- Media Relations
Additionally, students enrolled in the various
management courses offered by the National Council
of Juvenile and Family Court Judges will receive
elective credit.
A proctored final examination based on the required
courses’ materials will be required.
All courses will be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
The fee for each course is all-inclusive, which
means that there are no extra costs for reading
materials.
Students are eligible to enroll for any courses
without having to enroll for the certification
program.
Students will be supplied with appropriate
information to facilitate their navigating through
course materials, including a personal password that
will enable a student to review his or her
enrollment history..
